Dr. Helen Belyea spent 41 years working for the Geological Survey of Canada.  After her time spent on the Leduc, Alberta oil discovery Dr. Belyea continued on in geology and focused her studies on the Devonian System of Western Canada (Mentors).  The Devonian System existed as long as 395 – 345 million years ago, within the Paleozoic era (Dictionary Geology).  According to the World Encyclopedia, the first known land animals, insects and land plants have been found to have come from this era.  Dr. Belyea’s first paper was written on the Reef Sequence in the upper Devonian (Bodo).

The Devonian Period, North America and Northern Europe joined together forming Euramerica
